A quantum leap in employee communication
“Fresh thinking for better cars” - the guiding principle of GM’s largest European brand was also the guideline for the new web-based intranet of the European engineering organization. Since May 2005 a unified platform for exchanging information and researching documents has been available at around 7,000 computer workstations.
The goal of the system is to serve as a central store for the experience and knowledge of employees in vehicle development. “Self-Service Publishing Retrieval” (SSPR) offers full-text and metadata search across all content on a unified storage structure - fast, self-explanatory and secure, with window techniques, context menus and drag & drop. Every content owner maintains information without programming knowledge.

Whereas research previously required longer search times due to a directory depth of over 20 levels, information today is only a few mouse clicks away. Key factors were proactively involving all data owners, consolidating existing databases and storage systems and introducing a central intranet.
Developed by inxire on the basis of inxire ECM, SSPR uses standards such as J2EE and XML. All web content is held media-neutral in DocBook format - the ideal basis for reuse in print and electronic media. Employees create and maintain their content independently, and every access can be controlled via a wide range of permissions.
SSPR considerably simplifies heterogeneous storage structures and lowers the total cost of ownership. The system is scalable, highly available, stable and performant; extensions can be installed during ongoing operation. In virtual project rooms, cross-functional teams communicate, exchange data and plan projects - saving coordination effort, time and cost.
